My girlfriend and I are making a trip to Vegas this coming Friday morning (leaving around 5am to avoid LA traffic) and returning Sunday evening. We originally were looking to fly since cheap flights are easy to get there. However, I really just wanted to try driving there to see how that will go. I have heard the LV-LA traffic can be horrendous some weekends but we shall see! Taking the STi so that we can have air conditioning rather than melt our faces off in the Miata. I just bought a nice window shade to help save the interior from turning into fire in the Vegas sun.
Got it with same day delivery so I will check it out tonight. Seemed like a decent option.
Also went and bought an FM transmitter to use for the trip since I was able to get that same day delivery there too (and had to meet the $35 minimum anyways). I know FM transmitters are generally garbage but I figured I would give it a shot since I am tired of just having CDs in the car. I want to eventually just upgrade the whole sound system but for now if I find the sound quality acceptable, it should be adequate for the short term. I think a wired FM connection (plugged into the antenna port) would probably be better but this is far easier. If I am pulling the head unit I might as well just replace it at that point. Hopefully this thing, my dash cam, and a phone plugged in to charge doesn’t blow the fuse.
Never heard of the brand but it has Bluetooth 4.2 and 2 fast charging ports so it has everything I need.
Anyways, pretty sure we are just spending time at the strip along with enjoying our airbnb in the Red Rock Canyon area (a bit out of the way, but that’s a good thing for relaxing). Hoping to visit the Hoover Dam on Sunday. My girlfriend still thinks the Grand Canyon isnt far but I think that would be a bit of a trek for a very short visit. Anything along the way I MUST see? We have time on Friday since we are going early. Just planned on cruising via i-15 but will be happy to look for detours.

Leaving Vegas back to LA is a nightmare anytime between 2pm and 7pm. Other than that have a great trip!

Make sure you check out the auto museum above The Linq. They have a rotating stock of cool stuff, a lot of it for sale in case you win bigly in the casinos.
Eat everything in sight. There’s no shortage of good restaurants.
As a word of warning, there’s an upscale steak / seafood place called Joe’s that serves stone crabs, which will make you shit your brains out approximately 15 minutes after leaving the restaurant. Confirmed by myself and 3 others. The food (especially the crabs) was delicious, but I nearly shat myself on the walk back. Make sure you have a route to a nice bathroom prepared in advance if you choose to indulge.

Hmm, getting on the road early is probably our best bet then. Friday-Saturday will be enough of all the excitement anyways.

The problem with the Grand Canyon isn’t how far away it is, but to get anywhere on it you have to drive around it, which takes forever. There are companies that offer helicopter tours of the Canyon from Vegas if you want to do that. There’s a lot to see out there though, but anything you go to (including the Hoover dam/Lake Mead) will easily fill a weekend. If you want a detour on the way there, go to El Mirage dry lake and see what your car can do.

That LA to Vegas run is on my, “if I win the lotto and have all the time in the world” list. Sounds like a blast. Take the inside the inside the Hoover Dam walking tour if you can, it’s cool.

Shoot for 150 minutes, a good pace. Don’t miss In N Out in Victorville.

I think I will gamble a total of $1 just to say that I did. So I don’t think I am going to be winning very much lol. I didnt see a website for the auto museum, and trip advisor says its closed. So that might not work out so well.
Looking forward to stuffing my face though for sure. We will be walking way too much all day going everywhere so I will be hungry as hell.

“steak / seafood place called Joe’s that serves stone crabs, which will make you shit your brains out approximately 15 minutes after leaving the restaurant.”
Ah yes... the tried and true ‘salmonella diet’ method of weight loss.

Haha sounds like a great way to blow up my Subaru trying that. Helicopter tours sound cool but I bet that is well out of my budget. Id like to go hiking down there some day but that will be a whole trip just dedicated to that.

Lol under three hours. I think I need a spotter plane to watch out for CHP for me. I imagine that is a lucrative route to catch all sorts of wild people. I am sure to get passed by many people while cruising along at about 80. I hate my gas mileage above 80 and I have all the time in the world to get there.
150 minutes is an average speed of ~120mph.

I stand corrected, the place I was referring to did in fact close. Sad!
Don’t forget to drink a lot of water.

Ugh, last time I drove from vegas to riverside on a sunday, it took 9 hours. Never again. I wish you the best of luck

Do the trip at night if possible. Yes there’s a higher chance of encountering wildlife but it’s a lot easier on you and your car when you don’t have to deal with scorching-hot sun for hours...and a slightly lower amount of motorists to share the road with.
Sadly, the car collection in The Linq has been shut down as of New Years Day 2018 . That said, visit the Carroll Shelby Museum while you’re there!
...If you’re wanting a fun mountain run, visit Mount Charleston that’s northwest of the city. It’s a fun road even if it’s patrolled.

‘Pisgah Crater’ along I70 (I think it was) if you’re that way. There was very little traffic that way when I came through, but it was also the middle of the day on a Tuesday so who knows. Good place for a short break to enjoy the desert.
I really liked the desert. It was 90+ degrees and I was in jeans and comfortable. Not used to such a lack of humidity.

Subarus have rev limiters right? Time to find out! Although just driving to Vegas at 5 AM will probably give you a few opportunities to hit it. It looks like helicopter tours start at around $255/person and go up from there, but it’s easily the fastest way to see the canyon and you’ll see views you’ll never get any other way.

Forget the contrived city — Red Rock canyon is amazing and the Grand Canyon is awesome, but too far. A daytrip to Flagstaff is a bit closer and you can easily dayhike Mt Humphreys up to around 13k feet (trailhead is 9500’ or so). The aspen forests should be a nice break from all the heat and desolate brownness everywhere. Plus the city of Flagstaff is pretty cool too.

The LA to Vegas drive can be very heavily patrolled and have tons of traffic. If you want to see something different, and drive miles and miles at a time on small highways without seeing any one or anything, Joshua Tree National Park to Amboy to Kelso is a more interesting way of driving to Vegas. Just be sure to have plenty of fuel after leaving 29 palms.
As one who doesn’t like to gamble, this place is the best thing in Vegas.

On the same drive on two different days, I have tracked my gas mileage to be ~20 at 85mph and then ~24 at 75mph. It felt REALLY slow going 75 the whole way through the desert up to Bishop, CA but it was FOR SCIENCE. Both drives were no traffic on cruise control 90%+ of the time. I had replaced my leaky intercooler hoses and the oil in between those dates but it couldn’t have made that much of a difference. Tire pressures were about the same since I checked.
At $4 a gallon for premium (probably more out towards NV), that shit adds up lol. That is like ~5 gallons or $20 over the trip. That is a solid meal somewhere!

Will be leaving home at 5am so we should be out there before it gets too hot. Surely we will be cooked on the Strip walking around that day but if I can get indoor parking at least the car will be safe from the worst of it. It should only hit like 100 though according to the weather and its a dry heat so that is probably mild in terms of Vegas standards.

Haha i-70 is SLIGHTLY far from Vegas. I think you meant i-40 which is not out of the way at all. Definitely worth considering if I can convince my girlfriend we need to look at some dirt. I will look into it, thanks!
I also enjoy the dry heat. At some point over 105 or so, it is just HOT though. I could care less that its dry. Yeah its better than a humid 105. But getting shot to death is also better than being drowned. A solid 90 degree and dry day though is amazing (unless I have to be out in the direct sunlight all day), which is still thoroughly impressive to me. I am used to back east where above ~75 was TERRIBLE!!

Glad it wont be so so hot yet, although I am sure I will still be cooking midday. Hopefully not too much outdoor excursions while in the city. This trip is mainly a “tour vegas” kind of thing since I have never been there and my girlfriend loves it there. Definitely will check out some of red rock canyon though since we are staying so close to there.

Yeah DEFINITELY leaving early as hell before all of the hungover people wake up to head home. I won’t be drinking and we will have long days friday-saturday so I assume we will be happy to jet home in the morning on Sunday.

I recommend parking in the huge garage behind Caesars Palace but watch out for speed bumps. In fact, watch out for them in any parking garage while you’re there. Caesars Palace is in a perfect location because it’s in the middle of all the major casinos that you could walk to a majority of them provided you’re in good health and have water on you.
Oh, that said, bring a reusable water bottle like Camelbak or similar. You’ll see a lot of peddlers selling water on the sidewalks.
OH, speaking of sidewalks, don’t be surprised to see “slappers” handing out porn on business cards. I swear their cards litter all the sidewalks and gutters. Dunno if you’ve been to Vegas before but I dealt with them for years when I lived there as a high school student.

Or you could detour through death valley. Take the road up to Beatty then dive into the valley.

I40 sounds better. In hindsight we got on 70 on the way out of CO. It’s very cool (well hot), neat view from up top.
I agree about the humidity, it was 90 here a couple days ago with some decent humidity, I was longing to be back in the desert where that same dry temperature was bearable.

They’ll take my Oppo card for this, but I never pay for premium, not even in my RX-8 when I had it. I ended up getting a V8 that advertises how it uses regular. My conscience is clear...and I save enough for that extra meal. :)

Well I tried running 87 in my Miata once and it suffered some terrible engine knock that I do not want to experience again. Plus it got like 24mpg instead of 30 during that time. Due to the engine knock, I didn’t even try to see how much slower it might be. In the subaru, considering the ancient thirsty turbo motor, it would be a poor idea to attempt anything other than 91. Wish we had 93 here in California but such is life.

Another killer piece of road is from Beaver UT to Green River UT. Look for grey, blue, or white pick ups in the median o r other places. Do it when it is warm, as fast as you can possibly want to go. Last time was very recent in a 2003 325i chasing a late 90's s500 the whole time and he walked me at 135 every straight. Excellent driver. Dude touched 170 a couple times, math. Be careful on the downhill to the flats before Green River.
